Northumberland is a county rich in archaeological remains of all periods from the earliest prehistory to the most recent industry. The remains of 10,000 years of human activity can be found within its borders and many of these monuments place the North East of England not on the periphery of the British Isles, or wider Europe, but at the centre of both national and international events.
This guide is divided into two parts, the first examines each of the major periods of human activity on the coast highlighting the important and most interesting sites. The second part of this guide is a series of maps, showing coastal paths and access routes and listing those sites of different periods in each area which can be found along Northumberland's shores.
This guidebook is not designed to be an all encompassing archaeological Guide to the Northumberland Coast but it is meant as an introduction.
